Success is only 1% of your work

Small Business Coaching by Brilliant Breakthroughs, Inc. Topic: Success illustrated by a female chemist experimenting.
Success requires experimentation to learn mistakes to get closer to your goal.

Success is only 1%
of your work

Success is the goal of every Small Business Owner and Entrepreneur; yet, it isn’t common. Securing success isn’t for the faint of heart. One of the main reasons success isn’t commonly achieved is because most people have an adversity to mistakes and failure.

As a Master Business Coach, I’ve seen this time and time again. This isn’t a new concept. It’s what separates those who succeed and those who talk about success. Are you a person who is experimenting to find your path to succeed? YOUR Business’s Growth and Performance depends on this. If so, you’re on the right track.

According to The Speed of Trust (2006) by Stephen M. R. Covey, Soichiro Honda, the founder of Honda Motor Co., said, “To me success can only be achieved through repeated failure and introspection. In fact, success represents the one percent of your work that results from the ninety-nine percent that is called failure.”

Now that we understand that we don’t spend a majority of time working on success, let’s talk about what you should spend the balancing 99% of the time doing.

99% of your time should be spent doing this …

Experimenting. Experiment with your customer attraction, your customer engagement, as well as how you convert and serve your customers. These are the things that matter most in your business.

When you experiment (and you should always be experimenting), you will find the subtle differences that matter significantly to YOUR Customer and Your Business’s Performance.

If you want to grow your business, see yourself as a scientist conducting experiments to find the sweet spot. The more experiments you conduct, the sooner you will get to your optimal point of growing your business.

Here’s a great blogpost on WD-40 and experimentation.
Here’s another about Edison’s trials, errors, and ultimately his un-failures 🙂

Small Business Innovation

Whether you’ve thought about it or not, you, as a Small Business Owner are an innovator. When you started your business it was because you saw something differently (innovation). You wanted to create (innovate) a solution for someone with a need or aspiration.

One of the ongoing roles you have is to be the Master Experimenter of each step of your business.

First: Focus on YOUR Customer Experience – always be fine-tuning this.
Second: Focus on YOUR Support Activities – behind the scenes actions.

There’s no hack here. Fact: This is the 99% of your work to get you to your 1%!

If you are seriously committed to accomplishing your goal of having a profitable business, get busy focusing on what matters!

What holds you back from experimenting? Feel free to share your a-ha in the comment section.
