“Who Moved My Cheese?” by Spencer Johnson, MD
One of YOUR Business Rescue Coach’s Favorite Reads!

“Who Moved My Cheese?”(1998) is a great book.  Why would I rate any book as

"Who Moved My Cheese? Business Rescue Coach of Brilliant Breakthroughs, Inc.
“Who Moved My Cheese?
It’s Time to Find It

great? Well, it would have to be meaningful and be filled with a-has, but more importantly in is transcendent. What do I mean by that? Anyone who reads it, regardless of who they are, where they live, their station in life, or their industry will be able to learn from this book.

I respect Dr. Johnson as he accomplished taking a great and complex concept and bring it down to a “practical and tactical” manner for others to understand it and apply it with ease in “Who Moved My Cheese?”.  When I read this book today, I thought about all the buzz it created when it first came out. It was almost insane how this concept and it’s terminology swept across workplaces! But what was even more amazing is even though it was a #1 Bestseller, it was short-lived by many companies. I find it even more applicable in today’s market.

“Who Moved My Cheese?” is a Guide for Entrepreneurs

The area where I find “Who Moved My Cheese?” most applicable is for entrepreneurs. I bet you aren’t surprised! Entrepreneurs have the ability to transform a business effectively and efficiently because the owner’s presence and thumb prints are still all over everything. Additionally, “Who Moved My Cheese?” has a particular vocabulary which will help organizations identify situations swiftly and in a smaller unit can become a powerful communication tool for effectiveness.

Hey, can you believe that I was able to weave my 2 faves of “practical and tactical” and “effective and efficient” into one blog post? 🙂

Where I find “Who Moved My Cheese?” most significant for entrepreneurs is the flexibility concept of always seeking cheese (living in Wisconsin, I love the concept of always looking for my cheese- wait, maybe I don’t, since I really enjoy eating cheese)!

OK, back to the basics… “Who Moved My Cheese?” opens the door for any organization, even a solo-entrepreneur, to step into change management to improve circumstances. Typically most entrepreneurs are diligent about finding new offerings for customers, better ways to improve service, generate more revenue, and improve the bottom line. “Who Moved My Cheese?” helps you step into the realm of business and change management success via talking about non-threatening items: mice and cheese. This is sheer brilliance and relevant to everyone who is in a business! Dr. Johnson will help you learn how to identify YOUR cheese when you see it!

“Who Moved My Cheese?” for Business Owners/Leaders Self Assessment

Last, as a business owner or leader you need a way to assess how effective you are from time to time – “Who Moved My Cheese?” helps you evaluate your performance in critical areas to your performance, which we know ultimately and directly impacts your organization’s performance.
BONUS: “Who Moved My Cheese?” is a quick read. You will be able to read it, cover to cover, in less than 2 hours – and that’s with stopping to contemplate it! Don’t underestimate this – it is one of those power-packed lessons that’s also enjoyable. It really is a must read! If you haven’t or it’s been more than 2 years, I encourage you to now 🙂

It can be all different this year…
if you plan to deliver different results in 2013!

  1. This book was required reading when my division split from Abbott Laboratories to form a new company. It was integral to the change management message. We of course, all groaned at the required reading. But in the end we had lots of fun discussing the content. Enjoy!

    1. Glad you got something out of it! Now that you have your own business, maybe you should read it again… you may look at cheese a little differently than when you were in a corporate setting 🙂 Enjoy being a-mazing 🙂
