The following is what Masha Pavlova wants to share with you:

Your Four Steps to Add New Habits

Have you ever found yourself reading a book, attending a conference, or watching an online course and getting excited about the possibilities of implementing the new information in your business?

You feel energized as you take vigorous notes, and envision how much better your business will be with this new applied knowledge. As the meeting is done and the book is laid aside, you set the intention to get going on your new plan the next day. The day comes and goes, full of work and meetings. You tell yourself you will get to it the next chance you get.

Time seems to fly by as you address all the necessities in your business – serving your clients and putting out the fires all while struggling to maintain the nearly non-existent personal life. At the next event, you open your notebook to find all those notes and grand ideas forgotten, and tell yourself: “This time will be different. This time I’ll do better.”

This process is very familiar to most entrepreneurs and small business owners. Despite the best of intentions, it seems like you have no extra time, energy, or mental capacity to add anything new to your plate. Your cup is full. It feels like there is simply not enough space left on your mental hard drive.

While willing yourself to do what you must is certainly an option, there is a much more peaceful and sustainable way to create lasting change in your life and business. Similar to the conflict resolution tactic described in Step 2 of my chapter, Your 5 Steps to Resolving Internal Conflict in Brilliant Breakthroughs for the Small Business Owner, Vol. 5, the solution is simple. The goal is to begin by playing into the habits which already exist.

Instead of fighting to replace old habits with new ones, overlay the desired habit over the existing one. In other words, rather than seeing it as an either/ or, integrate the two to begin the long-term transformation.

Ask yourself – What is it I already do on a regular basis? What existing habit can this new task be weaved into?

Here is what the Four Steps look like:

  1. Identify the intention. Why is it important? What impact will it have on your business?
  2. Break this task into small steps so it becomes actionable instead of theoretical.
  3. See which of your existing tasks you do on a regular basis hold a similar intention.
  4. Pair these tasks together so they flow in with your daily schedule.

Here is how this may look in your business based on the initial example.

Let’s say you attended a training which taught you a new marketing strategy to promote your business. When you get back to your business, you find tasks which seem more urgent. Those tasks take prominence, so you push it off for later and eventually to the “someday” to-do list.

  1. This marketing strategy will stabilize the flow of new leads and clients into my business.
  2. When you break down the tasks, the first is Facebook Lives to facilitate engagement.
  3. Normally, it’s hard to find the time and get into the energy of going on video. What you do on a regular basis which has the same energy is talking to your leads and clients/ one on one or group networking events.
  4. Schedule 5 minutes after your meeting to carry this energy over into doing your live.

Note: The existing habits you are linking to, don’t have to be business-related.

Example: Let’s say one of your tasks is to listen to an audiobook. Can you listen to it while you’re washing the dishes or are out for your run?

Experiment with the application of this concept. Try to use it with different tasks and activities. Be creative – after all, you are a brilliant entrepreneur and problem solver. Your habits simply need to level up as you take the next step into a fulfilling, profitable, and sustainable business.

Thank you ~ Masha
