Mind Power and our Breath
I heard an interesting set of statistics this week about the average breath rate of American adults over recent history. I was listening to Charlie Morley1 through a webinar sponsored by IONS (The Institute of Noetic Sciences).
We have gone from an average of 4.9 breaths per minute in 1929 to 15-20 breaths per minute in 20202. Charlie went on to say a breath rate that approaches 10 or higher puts us in a permanent “Fight or Flight” mode and has a negative effect on our health and level of anxiety.
So of course, I set out to do some research and found some interesting contradictions:
- Several medical sources stating the normal respiratory rate for healthy adults is between 12 and 20 breaths. Yikes, that would seem to mean it’s normal to be in permanent “Fight or Flight” mode.
- Several scientific and noetic sources talking about the health benefits of Coherent Breathing – which has a full set of techniques including taking about 5 breaths per minute! As well as the importance of making Coherent Breathing your new norm.
How much stress is too much?
My personal conclusion is it has become “normal” to breath too fast! I already know I am in chronic “Fight or Flight” mode. It’s such a normal state for me I wasn’t even aware of it until earlier this year. And most people that know me would say I am not a stressed-out person (most of the time).
But I am working with a Health Coach and my hormone levels in my blood work tell a different story of chronic stress. Given current normal ranges according to our medical institutions for breath per minute, I can probably assume I am not alone. (And don’t even get me started on Western Medicine Normal Ranges!) So how does one de-stress, if you don’t even know you are stressed?
The good news is breathing is a great place to start, and we can train ourselves to slow our breathing down again. Charlie Morley recommends listening to breathing chimes as opposed to trying to count, as counting becomes counterproductive to trying to relax. I found several breathing chime tracks on YouTube and of course there’s also several apps available. A good free one is called nothing other than the “The Breathing App”.
What does any of this have to do with Mind Power?
It’s more important now than ever to leverage the Power of our Minds to grow our business. We have exited the Industrial Age and Entered The Next Age™ and the way that work is conducted is completely different. This requires a significant transformation in our Business Models, Products and Services.
