Jelly Beans Variety

It came to me to write about this last week when my husband and I ran to Wal-Mart to get a bag of jelly beans for me (I don’t like chocolate, but love jelly beans) and a package of marshmallowed chocolate eggs for him. What happen next surprised us… we couldn’t find these Easter basket staples anywhere in the store!!! We were amazed as we went up and down the aisles with no success for him at all – as if his request was from another planet. At this point we really don’t know if they are even made any longer.

Next, we tried to procure 1 simple bag of jelly beans… you know, the bag for under a dollar. Well, I found a great variety of jelly beans by all sorts of manufacturers who had their candy’s shape altered into the classic jelly bean shape… but no basic jelly beans! I was so disappointed! I ended up running to a grocer later that day and found a bag which was over-priced and certainly wasn’t the “jelly bean flavors” we recall as kids (or even the ones I swiped from my kids’ baskets)!

This entire experience really took me down a thought path about differentiation of products and services. Have we, as Business Leaders, focused so diligently on trying to find the one thing that isn’t already on the market that we have forgotten to make sure our customers always have the option to make a “basic” purchase?

Apparently so! Now I have made it clear through earlier posts that differentiation is good for business, and I still stand behind that 100%. AND let’s remember to make sure that the basic version of your product or service is offered to your customers as well!

YOUR Business Rescue Coach’s Action Items for YOUR 2013 Difference:

  1. Review your offerings to assure you have a basic version and your differentiated versions as well!
  2. Review your language/copy of your offerings. Could you have a more powerful message by editing your language to address your customers needs and wants?
  3. Review your price points. Do you need to raise or lower your price points? Not sure, scout out the competition.

It can be all different this year…
if you plan to deliver different results in 2013!
