Business Strategy: The Leader’s Job Is To…

YOUR Business Rescue Coach asks:
What is the Leader’s Job in YOUR Business?
If you are the Leader of YOUR Business, what do you think is
the most important aspect of being a great leader?

So often leaders get confused… sometimes it isn’t even their own fault. And yes, other times it is completely their own fault. What on earth am I talking about? The chaotic leadership which many of us witness! Yet, I assure you that it really doesn’t have to be like this at all 🙂

Many moons ago I heard in a training session, “Are you a leader?” Most of us who were on the fast-track said, “Yes”. The facilitator then asked, “How do you know you are a leader?” There were a myriad of answers from my colleagues. Then the facilitator revealed the only factual answer to the question…. “You only know if you are a leader when you turn around and see that people are following you. If you aren’t being followed, you aren’t a leader.”

Now that was a no-brainer, wasn’t it? Yet, how many of us get caught in believing all the leadership hype?  Unfortunately, plenty of us – especially all the MBAs who get the hype tenfold.

Jack Welch, former CEO of GE, was  quoted saying,
“A leader’s job is to look into the future and see the organization,
not as it is, but as it should be.”

Wow, I can’t disagree with this one either! The lesson is quite simple. Unfortunately that is why it is often discredited, but I will share it with you anyway. Effective leaders need to be envisioning, daily, what they business ought to be one day and then share that inspiring vision with the rest of the organization. If a leader does this well, they can turn around and noticed that they are being followed. Once followed, magic happens! Doubt me, give it a try 🙂

YOUR Business Rescue Coach Asks:

1. Are you envisioning, at least 10 minutes a day, what your business should look like? (My clients have revealed this as a key aspect of their daily leadership routine.)

2. Once you have that vision, are you effectively communicating with your team what it is?

3. Are you inspiring your team with your vision that your words move and inspire them to a “YES!”, with immediate action to bring forth this new reality?

  1. Hey Maggie,

Great insights! I love the revelation about the leader aspect — and looked around and did find followers! Very cool! Also I notice with my new business venture of Illuminated Engagements I am thinking ahead not only daily, but probably hourly!!! And having a blast doing it. Isn’t this what creative ventures are all about?

    1. Congrats Blake! Now, imagine for a moment how businesses could be if every leader of each organization or team would make their envisioning time a priority daily… conscientious business would emerge quite swiftly! Happy Easter and/or Passover to you and everyone!
