Business Strategy: Managing your business’s future success and zippers

money tree
Is this your money tree?

          YOUR Business Rescue Coach asks:
Do you know what your next innovation is for 2012?
Looking for something new to bring into your industry?
Are you customers giving you clues as to what they want?

OK, we are all looking for our money tree, right? But have you ever considered not looking in your own backyard? What? Indeed, it is true that some of the most common; yet significant innovations happened outside of their own industry….

Imagine that you own a shipping yard (imagine it with some harp playing music that is taking you back in time) and you have been using zippers to close up bales of grain, etc. to keep your goods contained during transport… yep, that’s really why zippers were invented! Bet you didn’t know that, did you 🙂

Let’s fast forward to today where we have zippers on pants, boots,  jackets, shoes, sandals, backpacks and even diving gear. What a difference! Can you imagine being in the clothing industry where buttons ruled the world when someone got  “just a little squirrely” and tried putting a zipper on a piece of clothing? Wow – and today we can’t imagine it any other way!

Repeatedly, throughout history, most of the greatest innovations happened because
owners and managers noticed something that was outside of their own industry
and envisioned how it could improve upon theirs.

Have you already had something like this happen? Are you holding onto a great and transferable idea that could revolutionize your industry? Do have something that seems a little quirky to you because no one else is doing it? Have you found your zipper yet? If not, open your eyes very wide – you never know where it is waiting for you to discover it 🙂
