Business Resource: Communicate Like You Mean It Article

YOUR Business Rescue Coach asks:
Do YOU communicate like you mean it?
Are you more frequently understood or misunderstood?

Quite often a lack of effective communication is the root of a problem. Too often people don’t think about what they want to convey to another, prior to speaking or writing it. Ineffective communication is a significant problem in our world- both personally and professionally.

For some reason people tend to assume everything is implied… as if we are all mind readers! One of my clients told me yesterday, as we were working on his national presentation, “Misunderstood communication is what messes up the whole freakin’ world!” Now, how could I disagree with that?!?!??!

In the 1990s I was at a seminar and one to the topics presented was communication. It was a small part of the whole scheme; however, the presenter said something that was critical to my professional success, “Make sure the words you use to communicate are not necessarily what you want to say, but more importantly they are the words that your audience, whether one of a thousand, will understand. Convey your message so it comes to them like a jet doing a perfect 3-point landing – solid.” At the time I was an executive recruiter and was in phone conversations with people for a minimum of four hours each day. This was a significant lesson for me… communicate so the “other” understands me.

This is something that has stayed with me and why I find Steve Tobak’s quick article of https://www.cbsnews.com/  on CBSnews.com, quite necessary for EVERYONE 🙂 I whole-heartedly agree ,with each point and have just spoken directly about his second point; however, I believe his first point is the “quality control of effective communication” (at least in my book)!  If this is your challenge, please, give me a call as I have helped others with this in just a couple months 🙂 So which point do you wish people would do more?
