Business Strategy: Throw Away Your Briefcase

What, throw away my briefcase?!*#?%?$!

Oh, oh, has your Business Rescue Coach gone crazy?!? Don’t worry – not yet! Take a look at your briefcase right now. Look at the exterior and interior of it and all that it contains. Yes, I will wait while you stop reading to review your briefcase…

Is your briefcase dusty and messy with things which really need to be thrown away (gum wrappers, old post-it notes) or items that need to be filed (receipts and notes/files)? Is your briefcase fully loaded with books, documents, and folders which you aren’t doing anything with, except lugging them around?

Chances are you have said yes to at least one of the above questions. So now I ask: Why do you still carry around your briefcase, especially when you aren’t using it appropriately? Don’t worry, I’m not going to suggest you throw away your briefcase! However, I am going to ask you to clean it up, just like you clean the interior and exterior of your car.

Good news: Briefcases will never be antiquated, they are our “security blankets” – everything we need is there, at a moment’s notice. I know this, I had one that was always chocked full of everything I could possibly to climb the Himalayas!!! Gee, give it a try: Give your shoulder a break and quit carrying around all that stuff everywhere you go.

Now, there is another type of briefcase user I want to warn you about. Don’t become this person: The one who lugs files home every day. Why do people still do this? For some strange reason they believe that they will actually “get to it”. Really? How often do you “get to it” unless it is absolutely necessary to have “it” completed by morning? Endless conversations reveals this just doesn’t happen too darn often.

Your Business Rescue Coach’s 3 Briefcase Tips:

  1. Don’t allow your briefcase to become your mobile junk drawer any longer 🙂
  2. Don’t lug your briefcase to and fro to look like you are a hard worker.
  3. Don’t load up your briefcase with potential “I’ll get to its”. This only makes you feel like you aren’t accomplishing what you need to. Ultimately, you start the next working day with the mindset of failure instead of optimistic enthusiasm to accomplish whatever is placed before you.
