Brilliant Breakthroughs Business Movie Reviews emerged because movies are a great way to be inspired and/or learn from a fresh perspective! Typically, I share if the movie isn’t G or PG Rated so you have a choice whether appropriate for family viewing or not. “Soul Surfer”, is a remarkable and inspiring family movie to enjoy.
“Soul Surfer” is a movie about Bethany Hamilton’s life, career, family, challenges, victories, and faith. This is a true story of a teenage girl, Bethany, who lived in Hawaii, had parents who were competitive surfers, and was surfing at a competitive level as a teen. Then, the unthinkable happens. She was out surfing, and a shark bit off her left arm. I don’t want to share more – no spoilers here. I encourage you to watch; at the very minimum, you will be in awe of such a young woman who had an opportunity to choose to actively create her destiny to become a Pro Surfer!
BUSINESS STRATEGY #1: COMPETITION
What, or who, improves your performance?
Bethany had a fierce competitor, Melina. Melina kept Bethany in the “performance improvement zone”.
Strategy #1: What keeps you wanting to be improving your craft? Is it a person or perhaps a thing? Whatever it is, it is important to your success! “Competitors” keep us in the game. They help us keep our eyes on the prize. When you are competing for something, take a moment to acknowledge those who bring out the best of your game. They help you improve your performance. This can be even more significant if they “win”. This provides great focus. Watch the movie and learn from Champion Surfer Bethany!
BUSINESS STRATEGY #2: FAITH
Moves mountains and creates champions
Bethany’s family had strong faith. As a teen, she was focused on living a Christian life of volunteering, mission work, etc… When she was put to the test, via losing her arm, she went into a discovery process to discern her own beliefs. She was challenged at times, literally and figuratively. Her faith helped her move mountains! She learned to surf again, being inspiring and sharing the joy of life with others through a strange chain of events.
Strategy #2: When times get tough, what do you do? Do you trust that you are on the right path? Do you discern if maybe you’re off your course a bit? Do you find ways to do what you came here to do? Challenges and obstacles are there for everyone in business. What you are experiencing may be new, but probably not so unique. Stay diligent to find a way to allow the challenges to improve your performance and your business’s performance. It will be worth it!
BUSINESS STRATEGY #3: CHOICES
Opportunities are everywhere
Bethany was gifted with a close and supportive family. Yet, she had to make her own choices. Throughout her life, her family encouraged and supported her. When her accident occurred, this was amped up. She had to choose how to prepare food, get dressed, fix her hair, find peace with her accident, see the blessings in life, and let’s not forget to carry a surfboard and learn how to surf again!
One of Bethany Hamilton’s quotes near the end of the movie is, “I wouldn’t change what happened to me because then I wouldn’t have this chance in front of all of you. This chance to embrace more people than I ever could have with two arms.”
Strategy #3: Do you notice the bounty of choices available to you? Do you make choices to support your goals? The above quote is a fine example of conscientiously choosing to address the media and sharing a powerful message. It inspired me to think about what would happen if every day a media crew stormed my office. What would I say, and what would I make happen for them to film about? What about you? What would you create?
