Wolf Pack Management
for Small Business Owners
Wolf Pack Management… what the heck is that and how does it relate to Small Business Owners?
Whether you’re a solopreneur or a small manufacturer, understanding wolf pack behavior will help your workflows and improve communications. Whether internal teams or outsourced teams, we all have them and they need to perform well!
Last I checked, getting a grip on these two points is beneficial for YOUR Business Performance.
This topic is so relevant I’m reviving (and tweaking) it from when it was originally published in 2012!
The goal of every business is profit. One of the ways Small Businesses become more profitable is by providing an excellent working environment for you and the individuals of your team.
Google is a great example of creating a work environment for teams to flourish and become more effective. Why? They perform better and are more profitable.
Wolf Pack Management is Natural
Nature provides some excellent models for us to follow… let’s look at the wolf pack. Wolves have revealed that it is through teamwork that they not only survive, but thrive!
“Never does nature say one thing and wisdom another.”
~ Juvenal
Even though there is an Alpha Male and Alpha Female in each pack, a wolf pack thrives because each wolf understands the critical role it performs for the success of the whole pack.
While wolves are still pups, they’re trained in their role so they can effectively support the pack.
Members of the pack must perform their duties to assure survival and what I call “thrival” of the pack!
Wolves collaborate and teach each other how to be the best each member can possibly be for the pack (collective) to be effective and efficient.
Vince Lombardi said, “Individual commitment to a group effort – that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.”
Coach Lombardi is absolutely correct! Now, how does this apply to you?
Action Items to strengthen your Wolf Pack Management
Make sure you first understand what your overall goals are for your business: Why do you exist? What do you want to make happen for your customer experience? What’s the best type of culture for your team? What type of environment/atmosphere do you want your workplace to be?
Once you have the above basics determined, review your job descriptions for each position on your team. Do you have a job description for each role (including yourself)? Remember: everyone’s job is to serve the pack and each other via their individual contributions to your pack/team.
NOTE: In business we call the pack an organization/company/business. Everyone works as a team to fulfill the goals or objectives. Individuals are team members or internal customers (because internally individuals serve other team members, not just external paying customers).
If you are one of the Alphas (leadership and/or management), your job is to make sure each one of the tasks is fulfilled by one of your team members. Additionally, it is your job to communicate to the whole pack what each of your team members will do to support the survival and success of your team.
There you have it. Hey, I hear Duran Duran’s song, “Hungry like the wolf” buzzing through the back of my mind now!
Have some fun playing with this- making sure each team member of your wolf pack is supporting the overall mission of the business: perform well and make profit. Have some fun applying this to YOUR Business.
Feel free to share in the comment section one thing you can do this week to utilize wolf pack management to improve your profit margin.
