Keith Klein Headshot
What happens when you combine a sales and website expert? This exceptional guidance from Keith Klein!

In Brilliant Breakthroughs for the Small Business Owner: Fresh Perspectives on Profitability, People, Productivity, and Finding Peace in Your Business – Vol  3, Business Author Keith Klein shares his wisdom by introducing “Your Second Salesperson”. Keith’s tenure with websites is rare. In the book, he provides insights and guidance to help you pivot what your website is doing to gain revenue. Keith isn’t theory, I’m a client of his and every year he asks me the question he shares below about my business’s annual plan and what need to be created on my site to support my business’s goals. Allow this short article to begin the process to boost your business’s profitability.

The following is what Keith Klein wants to share with you:

Your website should be a living document, a reflection of your business.

One of the worst approaches I see for websites is the “poor catalog” approach.  Like the old days of print catalogs, many companies would “print it and forget it.” After printing a thousand or ten thousand copies of their product catalog or capabilities brochure, and mailing a few hundred, the remainder sat in a back room without a real plan for distribution. In my opinion, the distribution should be planned before the print run.

Websites are similar. An annual plan to get the most you can from your website – and to enable your prospects and customers to get the most they can from your online marketing – makes sense.

Don’t let this happen to your website:

Too often I see a narrow focus on a single issue or feature, or at most a couple of facets, of a website. I view websites as living documents.  There’s always a feature or two for focus. Your website should be broad and deep; you should be able to navigate your site like you’re on a mighty river, with plenty of ports of call.

If the emphasis is simply on the look of your site, it may lack substance.

If the emphasis is on substance, but not search engine optimization, your site may not be found.

If your site looks good, has substance and can be found, but it is never updated…why would anyone come back?

This is a website’s goal:

If your web presence is a healthy, living document, ALL the facets will shine…at least, none of your facets will show serious neglect.

I’ll give you an example: https://www.CrownOfCompassion.ORG

(“Crown”).  Crown is a ministry for downsized workers. We’ve worked with Crown on their web presence for about eight years now. Their aggregate number of unique visitors per month, in total, is approaching a grand total of four or five-hundred thousand unique visitors.

Crown did a fresh redesign just five years or so after an initial design. They made a modest, but significant investment in a suite of tools to enhance what they do online. They’ve added content – daily – for years. They optimize each post. They engage with visitors on the site and in social media. They answer emails, and offer subscriptions to their posts. They use great images. They’re working with us now to establish an Amazon affiliate program which should produce a modest revenue stream. “They” is one person, Dave Henning, who has a full-time day job! Yet his site is easily among the top two million sites in the world, in terms of the traffic Crown gets!

Be the Skipper of your website and navigate well:

I’ve taken more than a few houseboat trips on the Mississippi River. There are always interesting beaches, towns and cities along the shore, and it is a great experience just being on the river. Be a great Skipper, and show your visitors a beautiful, broad, deep, easy-to-find and navigate, river of information about you. ~Keith
