Learn Business Strategies of
Inspiration, Distractions, & Perseverance

This is a movie about two aspiring women, who achieved their fame over 50 years apart. Julie & Julia (2009) is a movie about Julia Child, the wife of a US Diplomat, and her journey of success as a chef, author, and teacher. Julie Powell is a writer, now an accomplished author because she accepted an aggressive challenge to cook the 524 recipes in Julia Child’s cookbook, “Mastering the Art of French Cooking”, within 365 days.

Both women move through the tribulations of experimentation and accomplishment. Each of their journeys could be a stand-alone movie plot; however, this movie melds the two into one movie and keeps viewers on their seats cheering each woman to victory! Enjoy watching this very down-to-earth movie. There are many more strategies to help you achieve your success than the several I mention. Enjoy experimenting and applying the different strategies to improve your business success.

Julie & Julia Business Strategy #1
Inspiration

When we are inspired, we can move mountains. When we aren’t inspired, even the mundane is daunting.

Julia appreciated the different types of flavors and textures food offered. She appreciated creating something for each meal. Whatever Julia did, she did it in grand fashion. To her cooking was a science and an art, as well as creation and accomplishment.

Julie was inspired to do something different with her life. She was destined to be a writer but ended up down a different career path. Julie was inspired to create a challenge for herself to learn what she was “made of”. Once she decided to create 524 recipes in 365 days, her husband suggested she share her journey in a blog. The writer in her accepted the challenge.

Inspiration Best Practice: As you take on any new project, make sure it comes from the depths of your values and interests.

Julie & Julia Business Strategy #2
Distractions

Have you ever noticed how there are times that distractions may support your success? Probably more often, distractions may hinder your success. Let me share an example of each.

Julia actually used distractions to find her success journey. Her husband was transferred to France and she needed something to preoccupy herself. She placed herself in the uncommon (for women) Le Cordon Bleu cooking school. Her challenges were many – including her size. Yet, she excelled because this was what she was inspired to do.

Toward the end when her cookbook’s manuscript is again rejected, she states to her husband, “Eight years of our lives just turned out to be something for me to do so I wouldn’t have nothing to do. Oh well, boo-hoo, now what?” Julia used her inspiration and distraction to become productive.

Julie found herself distracted with commitments from her daytime job, her mother not understanding what she was doing, and how her aggressive challenge was also challenging her relationship with her spouse. I’m sure you can relate to some of this. At times her distractions accelerated her and other times it deflated her. Overall, Julie used her distractions as a diversion from her mundane life.

Distractions Best Practice: As you see, distractions may provide you great pleasure or joy. Other times they will derail you from what is necessary for you to accomplish. Be mindful of which type of distractions you are allowing to become a priority.

Perseverance

Perseverance is about fortitude, promises, and experimentation. It’s through unsuccess that we learn what is successful.

Julia spent eight years trying to become a published chef-turned-author. Remember, this was back in the old days where everything had to be typed with carbon copy! See her quote above when she experiences another rejection. What is fascinating about this is, it was through her refining her recipes and experimenting with what people wanted, that she truly became an expert and gained a following. All these rejections led her to what she may be most famously known as, “The women who brought French cooking to Americas, the author, and TV personality”. That’s right, all those rejections led to the innovation of her doing her cooking show. Of course, she was published.

Julie was on a fast track. She was focused. Without a doubt, Julie was committed to being victorious with this self-imposed goal. She lost sleep and she lost track of relationships. Throughout the year she had many flops, frustrations, and relations. One of my favorite scenes is when Julie is laying on the kitchen floor at one of her frustrating moments. This champ didn’t give up. Julie took it all on and finished the 365-day journey with great success and celebrated. She, too, published a book.

Perseverance Best Practice: I encourage you to pardon yourself along your evolutionary process of finding your success. Embrace the journey – all of it! The struggles are what make it a sweet reward. Remember, you won’t win if you stop. Continue to move forward, advancing yourself and or your team to the next level. If you do this your success rate and profitability soar.
