I’d like to introduce you to Diane L. Mader, a brilliant Attorney

In Brilliant Breakthroughs for the Small Business Owner: Fresh Perspectives on Profitability, People, Productivity, and Finding Peace in Your Business (Vol. 3), Business Author Diane L. Mader shared her wisdom of how “Bringing Peace to Work” can improve your performance and your business’s performance through making better relationships. Her mission is to help people, specifically people who are going through divorce, to be mindful of one another – especially when children are involved. Diane knows there is a better way – collaborative way to move through divorce. She is an expert conflict resolution guide.

Diane specifically shares strategies and techniques for self-management, which needs more conversation in most business circles.

The following is what Diane L. Mader wants to share with you:

“And all at once, summer collapsed into fall.”
– Oscar Wilde

The situation:

In Wisconsin, all around us, a momentous change is taking place. Are you aware of it? Are you noticing the chilled winds, the early sunsets, the falling leaves? Or, is your business (read busyness), dragging you from indistinguishable task to indistinguishable task, hour after hour, day after day, decade after decade?

Take a breath, pause, and consider your answer to the question of busyness posed above. If your life and your business are in sync, you are no doubt taking time to nurture yourself. You have noticed the changing season. You probably marked it in some way: apple picking, pumpkin carving, or even just walking through the leaves giving them an enthusiastic shuffle to enjoy the sound of their dry rustle.

The problem:

On the other hand, if you are functioning on overload, you are probably reading this with a quarter of your attention while nervously checking the time, your phone is ping, ping, pinging  at you, and you are about to strike X on this story and run screaming from the room. I can help you with that.

If you are constantly functioning on overload, your body is always stuck in flight or fight mode, and consequently it’s releasing chemicals that make you sick. Some call it “Google cortisol”. It is not necessary to be busy to the point of panic to run a successful business. Read it again, I’ll wait.

The solution:

Interested in a remedy? Let’s circle back to the change of season the earth is presently enjoying. Use Autumn’s extended arrival to create a new habit. Everyday, walk outside for 10 minutes. If you already walk everyday, add 10 minutes on to your usual walk. While you walk, clear your mind of everything except your breath. Still your mind by following your breath. If you notice the beauty of the trees, terrific. Then come back to your breath. If thoughts pop up about work or trouble, acknowledge those thoughts and consciously let them go.

Practice this intentional 10 minute walk every day. Remember, the practice has two equally important parts:  The movement and the quieting of your mind. This is Step One in your action plan to exchange an out-of-control busyness for a productive, fulfilling life and business. It is a literal step to support yourself. Enjoy the simplicity.
