Business Strategy: Perception in YOUR Marketplace Matters!

What is the perception in YOUR Marketplace of you and your services?

Perception, it is an unusual thing as it may not be a reflection of reality at all! Perception is how others see and/or believe you and your business to be  or how they want to experience you. Remember that saying, “Perception is [their] reality”? Well it’s true! Whatever a person thinks about something is precisely how they will experience it.

Yep, it sounds like we are ready to start a customer service training session. Don’t worry, we aren’t. But the two are amazingly related :)There’s a reason for that- usually perceptions are created via a customer experience  or are created from potential customers. I know the potential customer thing is a bummer, but know this is true!

Now let’s discover the power of The Perception Strategy…

If someone perceives  you are awesome and have the best _________, they will treat you as such and share that with others… their perception will become your reality (that you are awesome and your business will flourish). Conversely, if they perceive something negative and they behave as such, you and your business will feel the affects of that in Your Marketplace and wallet as well.

I know, this just doesn’t really seem fair, but it is how it happens.  How can you combat negative perceptions of you and your service in Your Marketplace? Realize that you, and everything about your business, are public. Pretend you are on a TV show and everyone is watching everything you do: servicing your customers, sweeping the floor, conducting your networking, and completing your paperwork, etc.

From what people have experienced (from you or another) they will create this perception of (1) who you are, (2) what you do, (3) how you do it, and (4) if they like you. All this boils down to: If they approve or find you and your actions favorable, you are perceived as “good”. The converse is true as well. Perhaps the best way to remember this is: “You and your business ultimately pay the price of others’ perceptions”.

And this is why Jerry Garcia, yes the Leader of The Grateful Dead, was 100% accurate when he said,

“It’s not enough to be the best at what you do;
you must be perceived as the only one who does what you do.”

Jerry was a Master Marketer. Doubt me? What do you think the “Deadheads” were all about? He was definitely 40 years ahead of his time in his approach to growing a business and good customer service! Recently, I heard myself modernize this as I was with a potential client, “It doesn’t matter how good you are or not, it only matters if others think you are the shiz!” And she totally got it 🙂  Are you the shiz in Your Marketplace?

Action Item for Your Self-Discovery:
Start asking around how others perceive you and your business. Listen, don’t defend. Make the changes to be Your Marketplace Shiz-zle with nothing but all sizzle!
